Swiss Company Register: May 2025 Trends

Swiss Commercial Register May 2025: Over 4,500 New Companies and a Rise in Liquidations

Yellowpages.swiss publishes latest insights from the Swiss commercial register – highlighting a stable rate of new business formations and a significant year-on-year increase in liquidations.

The May 2025 figures from the Swiss commercial register reveal two key developments: a steady number of new company registrations and a notable rise in company liquidations. The data, now published on Yellowpages.swiss, offers valuable insights into the ongoing transformation of Switzerland’s business landscape.

Business Registrations: Growth Continues Despite Uncertainty

In May 2025, 4,577 new companies were officially registered across Switzerland – a 0.5% increase compared to April and a 2.6% rise year-on-year. This upward trend suggests that Switzerland remains fertile ground for entrepreneurship, even amid international economic challenges and inflationary pressure.

Sectors showing strong activity include technology, consultancy, personal services, and niche e-commerce. The resilience in start-up figures reflects continued confidence in the Swiss market and its regulatory environment.

Liquidations Increase by Nearly 15% Year-on-Year

While the number of company deletions declined slightly by 1% compared to April, May 2025 saw a 14% increase in deletions compared to the same month last year, reaching 2,902 cases. More strikingly, 2,043 companies officially initiated liquidation proceedings, which is 14.7% more than in May 2024.

This spike may signal a delayed response to previous economic disruptions or a wave of strategic business closures – particularly in sectors still impacted by long-term changes in consumer behavior, digitalization, and post-pandemic restructuring.

Company Mutations Remain Stable

The number of company mutations, which include changes to company names, board members, addresses, and capital structures, reached 16,779 in May – up 0.4% from April. On a year-on-year basis, the figure remained virtually unchanged (–0.1%).

This consistency reflects stable operational adjustments by existing businesses, rather than large-scale reorganization or instability. Mutations are seen as a key indicator of internal economic activity within the registered business base.

Liechtenstein: Fewer Startups, More Closures

In the Principality of Liechtenstein, only 52 new companies were registered in May – a 4% decrease compared to April. Meanwhile, 88 deletions were recorded, marking a 10% increase, and mutation entries dropped sharply by 25% to a total of 616.

These numbers underline Liechtenstein’s comparatively small and volatile business environment, where single entries or exits can significantly influence monthly statistics.
